The MiG-31 was developed as a long-range interceptor capable of operating at very high speed and altitude, and it has an interesting connection to another aviation icon: the SR-71 Blackbird. During the Cold War, the MiG-31 was one of the aircraft specifically associated with the challenge of detecting and potentially intercepting extremely fast, high-flying reconnaissance aircraft like the SR-71. While the Blackbird relied on extraordinary speed and altitude to stay out of reach, the MiG-31 combined powerful radar, long-range missiles, and high-speed performance to defend vast areas of airspace.
