Direct sunlight hitting VR lenses can focus onto the displays and permanently burn them. Lenses also pick up dust and scratches in a bag. These covers press onto the Steam Frame's lenses and stay put, without taking the strap off. I made them from Valve's official Steam Frame CAD (core module released 2026-09-17, head strap assembly released 2026-09-25), not from photos or calipers. Each cover's inside follows the real lens profile, which is slightly tapered and non-circular. How it fits - No contact with the glass. About 1.5 mm of air stays above the lens surface. The only contact is five small crush ribs on the side wall of the lens body. - Five crush ribs hold it by friction. - Separate Left and Right covers. The lenses are canted and mirrored, so each cover is shaped for its own side. L and R are debossed on top so you can read them while fitting. - Checked against the full Valve assembly in CAD (core module + head strap): with the cover seated, the closest strap/housing surface (the face cushion) is 1.1 mm away. Pushed 1 mm further than seated, it is still 0.9 mm away. Every fit variant was checked. Fit options. Printers vary, so each side comes in three rib sizes: standard: rib interference 0.15 mm. Start here (most well-tuned printers). tight: rib interference 0.30 mm. Standard feels loose or falls off. loose: rib interference 0.05 mm. Standard is too hard to push on. Print the standard pair first. If needed, reprint just the variant you need. Print settings Material: PLA or PETG. PETG gives a slightly more forgiving press fit. Avoid very flexible TPU because the ribs need some stiffness. Orientation: as supplied, with the flat top on the bed and the skirt pointing up. The L/R lettering is on the bed side. Supports: none needed. Layer height: 0.2 mm (0.16 mm for a nicer skirt) Walls: 3 or more. The skirt is 1.6 mm, so with a 0.4 mm nozzle it ends up solid. Infill: 15–20% (it barely matters at this size) Brim: not needed. Use elephant-foot compensation if your slicer has it. The top edge also has a 0.6 mm chamfer for this. Per cover: about 6.5 g of PLA Plate: the 3MF has the L and R standard covers side by side on one plate. Use L goes on the wearer's left lens and R on the right. Turn each cover so its tab points up and toward the nose. The two tabs end up facing each other above the nose bridge. Press straight on until the cover stops. The ribs will feel a bit stiff the first time. Pull straight off using the tab. Tips: - No need to remove the strap, face cushion or nose piece. The covers were checked against all of them. - Print in a dark or opaque colour (or add an extra top layer) so the most light is blocked. The 1.6 mm top is already opaque in most filaments. - Third-party face cushions or nose pieces aren't in Valve's CAD, so test-fit once if you use one.
