This design took a little more experimenting than the simpler fruit shapes. I wanted the leaf to keep its recognizable pointed silhouette while still looking soft and almost handmade. The layered red, orange and yellow sections help bring out the natural structure of a maple leaf, while the chunky knitted texture gives the whole piece that cozy, textile-like appearance I was looking for.   The little arms, feet and simple smiling face turn it into a character without taking too much attention away from the leaf itself. The maple leaf already has such a strong autumn association, so I did not want to overload it with extra details. Instead, the color layers and knitted texture do most of the work. Place it next to pumpkins and candles, add it to a Thanksgiving display, or simply let it sit on a shelf as a small fall character decoration.
