Like many users, I found the stock battery life on the Steam Frame a bit lacking. To extend play time, I put my 3D scanner to work and designed this MagSafe battery pack mount. Fit & Design: Mounting: The bracket slides directly onto the rear of the stock Steam Frame battery. It has a snug friction fit that stays put without adhesives, though a strip of thin double-sided tape can be added for extra security. Assembly & Orientation: A two-piece design joined together using four M3x6mm screws. The screw hole pattern allows the battery holder to be mounted in either direction, so double-check that you have it oriented the way you want before securing the screws. Retention: Uses an embedded MagSafe ring so you can easily snap packs on and off. Cabling: Built around a 10-inch (0.8 ft) right-angle USB-C cable paired with a magnetic USB-C adapter for quick, hassle-free disconnects. Print Settings & Profile: Supports: Only required for the MagSafe magnet cutout. Support Interface: The uploaded print profile is configured to use PETG as the support interface layer for the cleanest surface finish and effortless support removal. If you prefer not to use PETG for the interface, be sure to adjust your support settings accordingly before slicing. Hardware & Components: Magnetic Ring: Inserted directly into the print during assembly: Amazon Link Battery Pack: Designed around these Anker packs, allowing easy hot-swapping between two units: Amazon Link Fasteners: (4) M3x6mm screws Remixing: I’ve included the STEP file so you can easily modify the holder geometry for other battery dimensions. If you create a remix for a different pack, please upload your print profile so the rest of the community can use it! Frequently Asked Questions Q: Doesn't adding an external pack ruin the lightweight balance of the Steam Frame? A: Yes, it definitely adds noticeable weight. The trade-off is purely playtime over minimal weight. You could potentially use lighter 5,000 mAh packs, but most only output around 20W rather than 30W, which may not be enough to sustain power while playing. Q: Can this battery pack keep up with the Steam Frame's power draw while playing? A: In my experience, yes. Power delivery was my primary concern, which is why I chose the 10,000 mAh / 30W Anker packs to ensure the headset stays charged during active gameplay. Q: How comfortable is it with all that extra weight attached? A: Honestly, it’s a bit awkward. I only snap the battery on when I specifically need an extended session. I treat this as a functional stopgap until third-party or official hot-swappable headstraps hit the market. The upside is the empty 3D-printed mount adds virtually no weight on its own. When I want a lightweight headset again, I just pop off the battery and disconnect the short cable. Since I also use the friction fit application, it is also easy to remove the whole thing entirely.
