Mr. Ling the Apothecary – Shrunken Head Halloween

Meet Mr. Ling the Apothecary – a mysterious travelling healer who disappeared in the swamps of New Orleans after secretly boarding a Mississippi steamboat as a stowaway. The ship sank, his body was never recovered… and decades later, something rather unusual appeared again. This detailed shrunken head is designed for 3D printing, painting, hanging and customizing as part of my Halloween Shrunken Head Collection. 🧪 Meet Mr. Ling the Apothecary Mr. Ling travelled far from home carrying little more than herbs, remedies and a collection of strange medicines whose ingredients nobody ever really understood. Some called him an apothecary. Others called him a healer. A few simply called him whenever nothing else worked. During his travels, Mr. Ling eventually reached the Mississippi. Without a ticket and apparently without much interest in buying one, he secretly boarded an old steamboat heading through the swamps of Louisiana. A classic stowaway. The journey did not last long. One night the steamboat disappeared into the dark waters somewhere near New Orleans. The wreck was eventually found. Mr. Ling was not. For decades, nobody knew what had happened to him. Then one day, deep inside the swamps, an old collection of medicine bottles, herbs and strange charms was discovered. And hanging among them was something that looked remarkably familiar. Mr. Ling had returned. At least... part of him had. Nobody knows whether his medicines saved him, cursed him or simply preserved him a little longer than expected. 💀 What is Mr. Ling? Mr. Ling is part of my: Halloween Shrunken Head Collection I designed him as a detailed character model for: Halloween decoration miniature painting hanging decoration display fantasy and horror projects apothecary-themed decoration customizable props Mr. Ling has a very distinctive visual identity and works especially well as a painting project because of the many different materials and textures built into the model. 🧧 Character Details Mr. Ling contains several details that immediately communicate his apothecary background. Head wrap His large wrapped head cloth gives the model a strong silhouette and offers plenty of possibilities for: faded red dark brown burgundy worn fabric effects Stitched eye One eye is closed and visibly stitched, reinforcing the characteristic shrunken-head style of the series. Long moustache The oversized moustache is one of the strongest features of the sculpt and works very well with drybrushing and washes. Apothecary charms Below the head are several hanging elements inspired by travelling medicine containers and small apothecary accessories. These include: medicine bottle small box beads pouch-like containers decorative charms Integrated hanging loop The rope-style hanging loop is part of the model and allows Mr. Ling to be displayed as a hanging decoration. 📦 Included Files Mr. Ling is supplied in the same format as the other models in my Shrunken Head Collection. Complete model The original complete version is included so you can: choose your own orientation make your own cuts create your own supports scale the model prepare your own print profile Pre-cut version A pre-cut version is also included to make printing and orientation easier. After printing, the individual parts can simply be glued together. Included formats STL 3MF Prepared print profiles can also be provided for compatible Bambu Lab printers. ⭐ Best Quality For maximum detail I recommend: 0.12 mm Layer Height Mr. Ling particularly benefits from the finer layer height around: moustache stitches wrinkles cloth folds beads bottle details small hanging accessories For a faster print: 0.20 mm Layer Height still gives a very good result. 🌳 Supports Mr. Ling is not designed to be completely support-free. I recommend: Tree Supports Depending on orientation, support marks may appear around areas such as: chin moustache hanging accessories lower charms cloth ends These areas can easily be cleaned up before priming. A brim can be useful for smaller separated components but is not mandatory. 📐 Size The complete decoration is approximately: 160 mm tall The head itself is approximately: 90 mm tall The model fits on the: Bambu Lab A1 Mini and can of course also be printed on larger machines. 🔍 Scaling Mr. Ling can easily be printed larger. Larger versions are especially nice for painting because the folds, facial wrinkles and smaller apothecary details become even easier to work with. For significantly smaller versions I recommend using a: 0.2 mm nozzle to retain the finer details. 🔧 Assembly The pre-cut version requires only simple assembly. I recommend: Cyanoacrylate / Super Glue No complicated screws or mechanical connections are required. Simply clean the joining surfaces and glue the pieces together. 🎨 Designed for Painting Mr. Ling was specifically designed as a painting project. My usual preparation workflow is: Remove supports Sand visible imperfections Apply automotive filler primer Sand the model again Apply black primer Spray white or light grey from above Paint with acrylic colors or Speedpaints The light spray from above creates a simple zenithal highlight and makes all the sculpted details much easier to read while painting. 🖌️ Painting Ideas for Mr. Ling Mr. Ling works particularly well with warm, aged and earthy colors. Skin Possible colors: warm brown leathery tan desaturated ochre reddish nose and cheeks grey-green shadows Use dark washes around the eyes, nose and wrinkles to bring out the age of the character. Head wrap I would personally use: dark red burgundy brown-red faded fabric tones Add scratches, dirt and lighter edges to make the fabric look old and worn. Moustache Good choices include: dark grey dirty ivory grey-brown aged white Apothecary accessories This is where Mr. Ling becomes especially interesting. Try: aged brass worn copper dark wood old leather ceramic bottles faded painted labels Medicine bottle The bottle can be painted in a contrasting color such as: dark green amber deep red black turquoise A small gloss varnish can make it look like glass or glazed ceramic. 🧪 Weathering Mr. Ling should look like he has travelled a long way. You can add: dirt dust dark washes scratches faded fabric stained bottles chipped metal aged rope The model works best when it does not look too clean. 🧵 Customize Mr. Ling You can also use Mr. Ling as the base for your own apothecary-themed decoration. Possible additions: small herbs additional bottles beads parchment leather cord small charms miniature medicine labels dried plants The integrated hanging loop makes him easy to use as part of a larger Halloween display. 📷 About the Images The painted models shown in the gallery are painting and presentation examples. Photos of the actual unpainted 3D print should also be included so users can clearly see what the model looks like directly after printing.
