⚙️ Meet Charles the Inventor For decades, Charles worked as an engineer and inventor aboard one of the old steamboats travelling along the Mississippi. Engines, gears, broken machinery and strange technical problems were his world. If something stopped working, Charles could usually fix it. If something was already working... he would probably take it apart anyway. Then one night, somewhere along the Mississippi, Charles disappeared without a trace. No body. No explanation. Only a few tools remained behind. Some say one of his experiments went terribly wrong. Others claim Charles had been working on a machine that was never meant to leave the engine room. And years later... his head somehow turned up again. The goggles were still there. So was his wrench. And, of course, the pencil behind his ear. 💀 What is Charles? Charles is part of my: Halloween Shrunken Head Collection I designed him as a detailed character model for: Halloween decoration miniature painting hanging decoration display fantasy projects creepy workshop decoration custom props Charles is especially suited to painting because the sculpt contains many different materials and textures. You can work with: skin hair leather brass steel rust rope painted wood aged metal That makes him one of the most varied painting projects in the collection. 🔧 Character Details Charles has several details that tell his story without needing any additional accessories. These include: Engineer goggles The large goggles immediately give Charles his inventor and mechanic character. Classic yellow pencil A pencil is tucked behind his ear, as if Charles had been interrupted halfway through sketching his latest invention. Wrench A small wrench hangs underneath the head as one of his personal tools. Gear The gear reinforces the mechanical theme and gives the lower section of the model a strong silhouette. Mechanical component Another technical component hangs beside the wrench and gear, giving the character the look of somebody who carried pieces of machinery everywhere. Stitched chin The large stitches on the chin add the characteristic handmade, macabre look of the Shrunken Head Collection. Integrated hanging loop The rope-style loop is part of the model and allows Charles to be displayed as a hanging decoration. 📦 Included Files Charles is provided in several versions so you can choose your preferred printing method. Complete model The complete version is supplied as one model. This is useful if you want to: choose your own orientation make your own cuts create your own supports scale the model prepare your own print profile Pre-cut version A pre-cut version is also included. The parts are optimized to make printing and orientation easier. After printing, the individual components can simply be glued together. Included formats STL 3MF Prepared print profiles can also be provided for compatible Bambu Lab printers. Boost MeThanks for the Boost 🖨️ Recommended Print Settings For Charles I recommend the same proven settings used for the other models in the Shrunken Head Collection: Material: PLA / PLA-X Nozzle: 0.4 mm Recommended Layer Height: 0.12 mm Alternative Layer Height: 0.20 mm Walls: 2 Infill: 15% Gyroid Supports: Tree Supports Brim: Optional Approximate Print Time: 4–6 hours ⭐ Best Quality For maximum detail I recommend: 0.12 mm Layer Height Charles particularly benefits from the finer layer height because of his: goggles eyebrow structure moustache stitches pencil wrench gear mechanical details rope textures A 0.20 mm layer height is still a very good option if you prefer a faster print. 🌳 Supports Charles is not designed as a completely support-free model. I recommend: Tree Supports Depending on orientation, support marks may appear underneath areas such as: chin hair goggles mechanical ornaments wrench gear Because Charles is primarily designed as a painting project, these areas can easily be cleaned up before priming. A brim can be useful for smaller separated components, but is not mandatory. 📐 Size The complete decoration is approximately: 160 mm tall The head itself is approximately: 90 mm tall The model fits on the: Bambu Lab A1 Mini and can of course also be printed on larger machines. 🔍 Scaling Charles can easily be scaled up. Larger versions are particularly interesting for this character because the mechanical details become even more visible. If you want to print Charles significantly smaller, I recommend using a: 0.2 mm nozzle to retain the smaller details such as: pencil gear teeth stitches goggles wrench 🔧 Assembly The pre-cut version requires only simple assembly. I recommend: Cyanoacrylate / Super Glue No screws or complicated mechanical connections are required. Clean the joining surfaces and glue the individual components together. 🎨 Designed for Painting Charles is one of the characters where painting can make an especially large difference. There are many contrasting materials in the sculpt, which makes the model ideal for experimenting with different painting techniques. My usual preparation workflow is: Remove supports Sand visible imperfections Apply automotive filler primer Sand the model Apply black primer Spray white or light grey from above Paint with acrylic colors The light spray from above creates a simple zenithal highlight and makes all the sculpted details easier to see. For my example models I mainly use: Army Painter Speedpaints and acrylic paints 🖌️ Painting Ideas for Charles For Charles I would personally recommend combining warm skin tones with heavily weathered mechanical elements. Skin warm brown leathery tan reddish nose darker shadows around the eyes dirty green or grey glazing in deeper wrinkles Hair & Moustache grey ivory dirty white subtle brown washes Goggles dark leather straps aged brass frames dark or smoked lenses Metal Parts This is where Charles becomes really fun. Try: brass copper rusty steel oily black metal oxidized bronze Use dark washes and small bright metallic edge highlights to make the parts look old and heavily used. Pencil The pencil behind his ear is a small detail, but I would make it stand out deliberately: classic yellow body + wooden tip + graphite point That immediately gives Charles more personality. 🧪 Optional Weathering Charles almost begs for dirty weathering. You can add: grease stains soot rust oil marks scratches chipped paint verdigris on brass dark grime around goggles You do not need to make him clean. Charles has supposedly spent decades working around steam engines. He is allowed to look like it.
