Background: During World War I, the 75mm shrapnel shell became the single most common shell size used by the U.S. Army. Packed with hundreds of small lead balls, the projectile relied on a timed fuse to burst in the air causing the balls to fall on the target area, similar to buckshot but much larger area. Because American forces heavily relied on French-supplied artillery, these 75mm rounds formed the backbone of U.S. combat operations on the Western Front.
