He had forgotten even his own original name after spending so many years in the service of the Dark Lord. During the final confrontation at the Black Gate of Mordor, he rode out as Sauron's messenger to meet Aragorn, Gandalf and the Captains of the West. Carrying possessions taken from Frodo, including his mithril shirt, he attempted to convince them that the Ring-bearer had been captured and tortured.
