Overview Our Lady Undoer of Knots is a beloved Marian devotion representing the Blessed Virgin Mary patiently untying the "knots" in our lives, those problems, struggles, conflicts, and difficulties that can sometimes seem impossible to straighten out. This 3D printable model depicts Mary with the symbolic knotted ribbon, creating a meaningful display piece for a home, prayer space, church, or the growing Our Lady Collection. And if you've ever untangled a spool of filament after telling yourself "it'll be fine," the symbolism probably needs no further explanation. History of the Object The devotion is based on the Baroque painting Mary, Untier of Knots, created around 1700 by German artist Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner. The original painting is displayed at the Church of St. Peter am Perlach in Augsburg, Germany. The imagery is traditionally connected to a teaching by Saint Irenaeus of Lyon, who compared Mary's obedience with Eve's disobedience, describing the "knot" created through Eve as being untied through Mary. In the painting, Mary holds a long ribbon filled with knots. As the ribbon passes through her hands, the knots are untied and the ribbon emerges smooth, symbolizing Mary's intercession in bringing difficult situations to Christ. Devotion to Our Lady Undoer of Knots has spread throughout the world and became especially well known through the devotion of Pope Francis, who encountered the image while studying in Germany. Supports & Removal Notes Tree supports are recommended where needed. Pay particular attention to the ribbon, hands, fingers, veil, and other thin details. The ribbon may contain narrow sections that can be damaged if supports are removed too aggressively. Work around the ribbon gradually and remove supports in smaller sections rather than pulling the entire support structure away at once. Use additional care if printing the model significantly smaller than its original size. Important Notes Designed as a decorative and devotional display model. Not designed as a children's toy. The ribbon and finer details can be damaged by rough handling. Scaling the model larger will generally improve both the strength and definition of the finer features.
