What It Is Mutiroll is a compact reusable reel designed around the cardboard cores found inside filament refill spools. Instead of throwing the core away, it becomes the central structure of a new spool that can be used to organise and store materials that are often difficult to keep neatly wound. Use it for: String or cord Electrical wire LED strips Thin cables Craft materials Flexible tubing Leftover filament Or anything else that can be conveniently wound around a small reel Because of its reduced size, Mutiroll is particularly useful for storing shorter lengths and leftovers that do not justify using a full-size spool. It is also quick to print, uses relatively little filament and makes efficient use of storage space. Some examples of reuse Part of the ReSpool Project Mutiroll is part of the ReSpool Project, a growing family of designs based around one simple idea: giving the cardboard cores from filament refill spools a useful second life. Other projects in the family explore different uses for the same discarded component, from storage and organisation to dispensing systems. Rather than printing an entire object from scratch, the ReSpool Project tries to use what is already available and add only the parts required to create a new function. Reuse the core. Print only what is needed. Give it a new purpose.   Upcycling by Design The cardboard core already provides a strong and lightweight central structure. Mutiroll simply adds the elements required to transform it into a practical reel. This reduces the amount of filament required while creating a compact object that can be printed quickly and reproduced whenever another reel is needed. It is particularly useful for materials bought in larger quantities, where small remaining lengths can otherwise become tangled, damaged or difficult to store. Key Features Upcycled core: Reuses the cardboard centre of filament refill spools. Compact size: Ideal for shorter lengths of cable, cord, LED strip and similar materials. Space efficient: The small diameter makes several Mutirolls easy to organise in drawers, boxes or shelves. Quick to print: Uses relatively little material and requires only a small number of printed components. Multi-purpose: Not limited to one specific material, the user decides what to wind around it. Easy to identify: The cardboard core can be labelled or written on directly with a marker. Materials The printed parts can be made in PLA, PETG or another suitable rigid filament. For the example shown, I used carbon-fibre-filled PLA, but standard PLA or PETG will work perfectly well. This is also a good project for using leftover filament and experimenting with different colour combinations. Assembly Print the required parts and fit them onto a compatible cardboard filament spool core. Once assembled, simply wind the material around the reel and secure the loose end if necessary. That’s it. No need to print an entire spool when the central part is already available. Just Fit the 2 sides - Thats it. If you find necessary, apply a bit of glue on the contact surface.Design Notes Mutiroll continues the same design approach used throughout the ReSpool Project: look at what is normally discarded and ask whether it can become part of the next object. The cardboard core is no longer packaging waste—it becomes a functional component. The result is a small, practical reel that is easy to print, easy to store and useful in many different situations.
