Introducing the Customizable Hand Fan, a fully printed folding fan built to be made your own. Thirteen printed parts pivot around a single central pin, opening into a wide ribbed span and folding back down to a slim stick you can slide into a bag. The file ships in two versions: a clean monochrome white fan that works as a blank canvas for laser engraving, and a color variant ready to print as it is. A DXF and an SVG template of the open surface are included, so the artwork on the fan can be yours instead of mine. Design & Concept I designed this fan based on the concept that the surface shouldn't be a static element. Four tall blades and four short ones alternate between the two end pieces—sequencing one tall and one short—and the entire assembly is held together by a molded central pivot secured with two stoppers; no metal rivets or other hardware are required. The all-white version is specifically designed to be treated like paper: the fan shown in the photo features a laser-engraved design depicting a wave, a mountain, and a flock of cranes across its full span, though this is just one possible interpretation. The included DXF and SVG files provide the exact outline of the assembled surface, allowing you to create and engrave your own custom design; furthermore, the 0.1 mm layer height ensures the blade surface is smooth enough to allow for crisp engraving, even of very fine lines. No screws, rivets, or glue required. • Alternating rib layout: tall and short ribs alternate around the pivot, allowing the fan to open into a full arc and close into a slim, compact shape. • Flat printing with no supports: every component sits directly on the print bed, ensuring fast production and clean surfaces on both sides. • High-quality finish: a 0.1 mm layer height gives the rib surfaces a smooth, uniform texture, ideal for optimal engraving results. • A personal canvas: a functional everyday object that showcases an image meaningful to you, lending itself to universal interpretations. Printing Recommendations: Printing tips: All components (High blades, Low blades, First element, Last element, End caps, Central pin): • Material: PLA. White for the monochrome version, or follow the color palette for the multi-colored variant. • Nozzle: 0.4 mm. • Layer height: 0.1 mm. • First layer height: 0.1 mm. • Walls / Perimeters: 3. The blades are thin and long; an extra perimeter ensures greater rigidity. • Infill: 15%. • Supports: Not required. Disable them. All parts print flat on the build plate. • Brim: Optional (for adhesion). Useful for the blades, given their narrow, elongated footprint. Assembly Print the four High blades, the four Low blades, the first piece, the last piece, the two closures, and the central pin. Clean the pivot holes and the slots so the blades move freely. Stack the blades between the first and the last piece, alternating one tall blade and one short blade all the way across, and align every pivot hole. Slide the central pin through the aligned stack. Fit a closure on each side of the pin to lock the assembly. Open and close the fan a few times so the blades settle into their travel.
