It collapses to around 100 mm, extends to roughly 300 mm, includes a working reel, and is designed to print flat  on the bed  for maximum strength. The Idea Behind It The idea for this rod came after I discovered Japanese micro-fishing, where people target extremely small fish and even hold competitions for the smallest catch. I had never really thought about fishing for tiny fish before, so I started researching the hooks, line and equipment used. My first version was made from wood, but it needed too much assembly and was not very practical. That made me think, I have a 3D printer, so why not design something that does exactly what I want? This rod is the result. It is designed for small fish, from little perch and similar species down to true micro-fishing sizes. Check out the video to see the wee perch I caught with it. Pocket-Sized Design The rod measures around 100 mm when collapsed and approximately 300 mm when fully extended. The goal was to make something small enough to keep in a pocket without it becoming a hassle to carry. It works well as a backup rod, or for those times when the bigger fish are not biting but there are plenty of smaller fish nearby. Designed for Strength This was one of the most important parts of the design. Most telescopic prints are printed vertically, which places force across the weaker layer lines. The square shape of this rod allows every telescopic section to be printed flat, so the layers run along the length of the rod instead. This gives it the strongest possible print orientation for its size. The rod feels surprisingly rigid when extended and can handle much more pressure than the small fish it is intended for. Working Reel The rod includes a clip-in reel with a small finger recess, allowing you to wind the line back in by hand. It can also be operated with your thumb, depending on which direction you spool the line. I kept the reel low-profile so the rod remains smooth and compact when collapsed. I may add an optional reel handle accessory in the future. Print Information The model is split across three print plates, making it easier to customise the colours. I highly recommend using the included print profiles, as a lot of testing went into getting the sliding tolerances working correctly. The full rod can be printed in PLA. Assembly Instructions 1. Assemble the Telescopic Sections The rod sections are tapered, so the correct direction should be visible by eye. Keep every part facing the same way, with the build-plate texture aligned on the same side. Slide the sections through one another, then pass the full assembly through the main body. Fit the butt cap onto the bottom once everything is in place. 2. Fit the Eyelets Press the eyelets onto the rod sections. They are designed to fit snugly, but printer tolerances vary, so I recommend using a very small dab of glue to stop them coming loose when the rod is collapsed. 3. Feed the Line Feed the line through: The top eyelet The second eyelet The third eyelet The body eyelet Pull enough line through to give yourself room to attach it to the reel. 4. Attach the Reel Before pressing the reel into the body, feed the line through the reel from the inside to the outside. Adding a small hook-shaped bend to the end of the line makes this easier. Pass the line through a few times, tie it securely, then carefully press the reel into place using firm, even pressure. Wind on your preferred amount of line. I used a few metres, which was plenty for testing. Hook and Weight Storage Once the rod is collapsed and the line has been reeled in, the hook and weight can be tucked into the butt cap. The cap then closes over the end, keeping the rig secure and stopping the hook from moving around loose in your pocket. Important: Tight Tolerances The telescopic sections use very tight tolerances to keep the rod smooth, secure and free from excessive movement. With some filaments, the sections may feel slightly stiff or may not fully extend at first. Gently work the affected section in and out a few times. The parts will usually wear themselves in and become smoother with use. This can vary depending on filament type, moisture and small differences in printing. If the sections remain unusually tight, make sure your filament is dry or try printing them with a different filament.   FAQ How long is it? Around 100 mm collapsed and approximately 300 mm fully extended. What material should I use? PLA works well. Does the reel work? Yes, it can be used to wind the fishing line back in. Why is the rod square? The square shape allows the sections to print flat, placing the layer lines along the rod for better strength. Does it need glue? The main parts are designed to fit together without glue, but a tiny amount is recommended on the eyelets. Can it catch real fish? Yes.
